What are the classifications of pile-driving machine assemblies?
2026-03-04
Piling rig assemblies (i.e., piling machinery) can be broadly classified into the following major categories based on their operating principles, functions, and application scenarios:
Classification by Piling Method and Working Principle
Hammer-type pile driver
The pile is driven into the soil layer by the impact force of a pile hammer. Common types include:
Diesel hammer pile driver: Suitable for suburban or non-sensitive areas, but it generates high noise and emits smoke.
Hydraulic pile drivers: environmentally friendly and with controllable impact force, they are widely used in urban and highway construction projects.
Steam hammer pile drivers: powered by steam or compressed air, they come in single-acting and double-acting types; while highly efficient, they are increasingly being replaced by hydraulic systems.
Drop hammer pile driver: a simple structure that relies on the free fall of a heavy hammer to drive piles, commonly used for small-scale or historic projects.
Static-pressure pile driver
Static pressure is applied to drive the pile into the ground via a hydraulic system, generating no noise or vibration, making it suitable for densely populated urban areas as well as environmentally sensitive zones such as hospitals and schools.
Vibratory pile driver
High-frequency vibration is used to liquefy the soil surrounding the pile, reducing frictional resistance and facilitating pile driving. This method is suitable for sandy soils, clays, and other soil types and is often employed in conjunction with a pile-driving rig for the installation of steel or concrete piles.
Bored Pile Equipment
It is used to pour concrete into the bored hole to form a pile, and mainly includes:
Auger drilling rigs are classified into long augers (suitable for shallow, dry operations) and short augers (suitable for deep, large-diameter holes).
Rotary drilling rigs: efficient hole formation, suitable for a wide range of soil types, and one of the mainstream equipment currently in use.
Positive- and reverse-circulation drilling rigs: rely on mud to stabilize the borehole wall and are suitable for complex formations below the groundwater table; reverse circulation offers higher cuttings removal efficiency.
Impact drill: relies on gravitational impact to fracture rock formations, suitable for pebbles, boulders, and hard rock layers.
Foundation Treatment Equipment
Rather than directly constructing load-bearing piles, the soil is improved to form a composite foundation or a cutoff wall:
Cement-soil mixing pile rigs (single-axis, double-axis, triple-axis, and quintuple-axis): used for soft-ground reinforcement; the triple-axis type is commonly employed in the SMW construction method.
High-pressure jet grouting rig: reinforces soil by injecting cement slurry under high pressure, suitable for localized reinforcement or seepage control.
Plank-inserting machine: used for drainage and consolidation of soft soil foundations, working in conjunction with a vibratory hammer to drive plastic drainage boards into the ground.
